Figured I'd create a thread to start a little offseason dialogue. Since the Winter Meetings are approaching, I'm curious what some of the other owners are hoping to see their fav. franchises do this offseason. Maybe a guy they'd like to see their team target/acquire? Or a guy they hope their team stays away from? Maybe somebody you'd like to dump. Start a rebuild? I'll start it off...
Cardinals Fan
G. Stanton - Brewers (Ben) and I have gone back and forth on this as Cardinals fans but, if the cost for acquiring (outside of his approval) is merely taking on the entire contract, and parting ways w/ a package headlined by Alcantara and pieces then, it probably would be done already. I'm not in the group of Cardinals fans that worries about the 3 year opt out, on the contrary. Opting out, and signing elsewhere would actually be beneficial. Give me 3 prime years of G. Stanton and I'll take it. I think he winds up in LA.
Z. Britton - I'd love to see what Baltimore would want for Z. Britton, assuming medicals check out. The org. has the pieces and dollars to get it done, for Stanton and Britton.
1 or both of those moves make St. Louis the best team in the division, imo. I don't think the Cubs are built like a Dynasty like so many people thought they'd be just 2 years ago. They're looking more and more like a team they went for it all, than a team set up like a Dynasty. They blew up their farm for 2 RP's who are no longer on the roster. They have no bullpen and their starting rotation is aging. They signed J. Heyward, to 1 of the 5 worst contracts in baseball. Guys like Russell, Baez, Schwarber, all thought to be cornerstones are looking more and more like average regulars. Get it done Mozeliak!

That's Brewers (Brad) there, Mr.
I expect that the Cards will get Stanton for something like Flaherty, Grichuk, Diaz and $50M covered by the Fish, post opt out. I am much more in line with signing 2-3 of the mid range relievers on two year deals - Petit, Nicasio, Cishek?
Also looking for SP depth options around the margins though I think the Cards are okay rolling with the depth they have at the ML level and high minors.

If the Marlins pay it down some, I agree Flaherty is the headliner. I've read that what St. Louis would really prefer, is setting a value to Stanton they believe he'd go for on the open market right now. Have the Marlins pay it down to that point. And then the Marlins can basically choose whomever they want (Including Reyes or Weaver). I find this one hard to believe. Hypothetical...Cardinals as Miami to pay $75M+ of the deal, Cardinals trade Reyes + pieces. As gifted as Reyes appears, I don't think Miami values Reyes is worth the money + the loss of Stanton. Agree w/ the bullpen takes though. Bryan Shaw, is a guy I like too if they can get him for 2 years.

stanton has a no trade, he will control a good bit of this. the LA rumor is partially cause of fund$ but i think most of it is rumors that is his preferred locale.

Stanton is from the LA area, as well. It's always been LA. Even before the report came out this week LA was looking in to what it'd take. Once we found out Stanton wanted to play in LA, it was only a matter of time. Dodgers have the money, and the prospects to get it done. Also...the article published on the Miami Herald yesterday, was no coincidence. A day after Stanton formerly announces his preference is the Dodgers (which scares everyone away) they post an article stating "Accept the No Trade or you're going to be part of our rebuild." It's the only leverage Miami has left and it'll be fascinating to see if Stanton calls their bluff.

Also...if Miami is telling the truth on their request that G. Stanton accept a trade, it likely means Miami has an offer they're ready to accept.

It really comes down to Stanton's decision. If he says he's okay with a trade to STL, then it's done. If he hesitates or says no to STL theN MIA can either pivot to the Dodgers or threaten to keep him and tear it down. Nothing keeping them from holding him and shopping him again after he's gotten a taste of how shitty the Fish are going to be.

i hope he does call the bluff. they hold like 10% of the leverage and he holds the other 90%. they are rebuilding so all he is to them is 75M+ over three years of salary + a 200M liability after that if he gets hurt, with no upside as he’ll opt out if hes playing well. even if they “sold off” all their ofher guys to show up stanton, it’ll still be in their interest to deal him. whats it to him, he stays in a town hes happy with making 25M per and can leave in 3 years, the only loss is the ability to play on a contender, but thats always iffy in baseball anyway and marlins mgmt almost has to blink evetually regardless. if he doesnt want to go somewhere, theres not much they can do to force his hand, making ultimatums and other ways of playing dirty (like the sell off threat) is only going to hurt the marlins when they want to sign other FAs later on. Agents will remember. only marlins lose here. if they can get rid of that contract just for $ relief, they should he ecstatic.

imo, stanton is better off waiting till midseason anyway, wait and see what contenders look good. wait for an owner to make a verlander type trade. marlins would rather dump cap now, but oh well. hes better off doing it then. and midseason a top contender will probably be making the best offer. and that is a much better bet if you want to go deep in playoffs than going somewhere now. take that no income tax in fla for another half season at least. then opt out 2.5yrs later and go to socal.

Couple things though...Stanton has said the most important thing in him deciding to waive his no trade is winning and playing for a contender. Yeah, they all say that but if that's what he desires that also means he's less likely to call a bluff unless he absolutely hates the destination (Every team I've heard rumored, from even NY or LA now are all serious players). I don't see why he'd HATE playing in Boston, St. Louis, or San Fran ( even if it neutralizes his power a bit). Those are all desirable and generally popular FA destinations.
I guess, what I'm saying is I don't see any way he's a Marlin next year. They're going to lose a ton of games moving forward. They want to trade him. He wants to be traded.
And yes, he's loved being a Marlin to this point but, there was also promise w/ guys like Yelich, Ozuna and Jose Fernandez (RIP). Now they've got what? An owner that wants to tear it down and cut the payroll way, way back. He's going to approve a trade because wherever he goes, he'll have a chance at the playoffs AND a good organization (even if it's not the Dodgers).

the thing is tho places like SF, BOS, STL are questionable to make the playoffs next year, but really almost every team is, how many times do teams in MLB surprise good and bad - all the time. maybe the dodgers, cubs, astros seem close to locks but that is partially speculative even. what if CK, altuve or bryant gets hurt, etc. if stanton’s no1 desire is to contend, then he is MUCH better off waiting till midseason and moving then. the picture is so much clearer post-asb about what places will contend the best.

I've heard that the Giants are also in the mix for Stanton. However, if he's going to be traded, I hope it happens soon, as it will help get Free Agency signings rolling. Personally, I'd like the "Japanese Babe Ruth" to end up with my team (Jays), along with one major Free Agency signing. That would be a nice X-Mas present!

my team is the braves, i basically hope they do nothing. maybe sign a RP w upside on a 1yr deal that can be flipped at asb. 3B is a hole but its ok to he patient there, freeman took some reps there last year even. if you can find someone reasonable for 1 or 2yrs ok. but no SPs please, braves have a stockpile of arms, let them work up. freeman, markakis, kemp are decent vets for clubhouse stuff. team is good as is, maybe they surprise and you can add some in july if so, if not this team is very well postioned to contend in 2019. splash the cash a year from now, dialing manny machado.......

El Guapo measures his hopes the Rays swoop for Ohtani. Seems that long shot, but we repeatedly hear rumors saying the Rays are a definite possibility. The Yankees are supposed to be the front runners, but we all know completely unexpected teams come out of nowhere and win the day -- remember when the A's snagged Cespedes? Who woulduv thought?

Never been a fan of the "real" Marlins and have a propensity to root for the players when it comes to money, but I thought the Marlins new FO response as Anthony shows above was brilliant. It's about the only thing they've done right since taking over the team. Stay here and lose forever or accept the trade we choose. Stanton (whom I like) is pulling the ol' Ken Griffey Jr as a Mariner move by stating where he wants to go and that's the only team he'll go to. Stanton can opt out after the 2020 season when he'll be 30 years old. He won't. He can thank Pujols and Miggy Cabrera for that. No way anyone pays him the equivalent or more than what his current contract would be after seeing Pujols choke the Angels and Miggy do the same to the Tigers with their contracts due to injuries and age.

Referring to Ron's point about Miggie and Albert. Dunno bout that. Cabrera put in a lot of very good years in Detroit. And Pujols hasn't had a bad run in LA, either, though his feet ain't what they used to be, for sure.

Stanton's contract is really not so far off what star players can expect to sign for these days. The problem for the Marlins will be getting someone to assume the fat contract and still give them young talent in return. Doubt the no-trade will play that big a role... unless the Marlins try to send Stanton to a perrenial non-contender somewhere in the heartland -- like Detroit or Pittsburgh. Long as it's a real team in the playoff hunt and on the coast, he'll go and be smiling all the way to the bank.
