I've always thought the Giants interest in G. Stanton was a bit weird. It reeks of an org. thinking they've got one last title run in them. Sure, a lot of things broke the wrong way for them last year but in reality, even in their titles years they were never considered one of the best teams in baseball. They've routinely failed to build up their farm system and somehow, someway they patchwork a lineup together, make the playoffs and create some magic.
Signing Stanton would be great for ticket sales. It'll be great for the clubhouse in the early going. But they are an aging team looking in the rear view mirror. Stanton only complicates things. That, and if I'm Stanton there is no way I want to play in San Fran where I'm losing at least 8-10 HR's because of the park.

I just wanna see a Stanton to dodgers trade where Puig goes to FLA. Make it official the Marlins are the scrap heap team of baseball. We’d get the comedy of Mattingly have to manage Puig again. And jeter would be stuck w the most un-jeteresque player he could find. A jester yes. I know it won’t happen. Joc would go the other way instead and Stanton would play RF. And I like Puig, so not ragging on him. Just as a fan would make a great story. Even if chances are neglible.
On another note, if the Marlins would take back gonzo (and gonzo agree to the trade) I bet the dodgers could give up quite a bit spec wise in a deal. Maybe that’s not sthg Marlins can do but despite dodgers huge payroll, the guys that actually contribute on that team are onlynthe payroll of a mid market team or so, if Marlins would take back some of that dead$ which dodgers have plenty of, maybe there’s a lot they could send. Dodgers are in spot where they could get under the tax, if not this year but year after. I’m sure they are thinking about that. The flip side is taking gonzo w no offset costs them so much more than others because of tax, so if Marlins want pure $ relief, LA has a hard time being aggressive.

Twins are fav team, I’d like to see them improve bullpen, our bullpen, and pitching in general has been pretty bad with exception of Ervin Santana last year Berrios looked pretty good to me too. Twins have some really good young position players to build around. Paul Molitor was one of my favorite players when I was younger so I kinda pull for the Twins as long as he's at the helm.

Berrios/Fernando Romero/Stephen Gonsalves. It's not all gloom and doom for Minnesota. It's the contrary. I like their immediate future.

Giants fan here. Thought it may be appropriate to give my two cents on the Stanton situation.
Personally, I think it COULD be a good move. The recent rumors are saying that we are willing to take on all of the cash, and in that case, he would come at a discounted price. I wouldn't mind us dealing anyone in our farm other than Beede and Shaw anyway.
I don't think it is too crazy to think that this team still has another title run in them, especially with a good offseason (and Stanton)
Think about it: this team, while older, is not much different from the one that won the world series. Last year, we were plagued with awful luck and pretty much everyone had a down year. I think that once Arroyo becomes a full time starter at third, we return to having a great infield. Our pitching, while down last year, is still headed by Bummy and Cueto (who I expect to bounce back). I love Blach as a fifth starter and Samardzija is a good 3/4 starter. Bullpen wise, hope for a Melancon bounceback.
Anyway, I'll quit blabbering about the roster. I think that we have a good roster, and outside of adding a starter and some bullpen pieces, you can see that our glaring weakness is outfield. We don't have a single player who is good at all unless Pence bounces back which I don't expect, especially considering his health issues. Add Stanton, and you get a huge star, but the outfield still isn't complete. I think we need a whole new outfield, and then this is a team that maybe won't win a world series, but definitely should be a playoff team.
I think Shaw fill either one of the outfield spots or replace Belt, allowing us to trade him. So depending on how the org thinks he is in the outfield, we would need two other than Stanton.
Anyways, I know this is a complete mess, but I think the Stanton move is a good thing. I still think this team can win games. There. There is your authentic SFG opinion. Can't wait to hear everyone completely shunning me and calling me a homer for thinking that we still have a playoff roster!

Tim hopes that his Braves will do nothing, but I doubt that will happen with their new GM in place. One thing that Alex A. won't do is nothing!

Yeah, I get a new GM May want to make his mark, but this team really seems set up for 2019, so why not wait till then to spend unless April/May the team looks ahead of schedule. I’m sure he will make some moves. I wouldn’t mind some bets on 2yr deals for instance. And there are some reasonable fits out there on bigger deals. Moose for instance. But it’s mostly about timeline. Partly to save $ and avoid risk. But also playing time for guys they may want to audition. I wouldn’t mind big spending in 2019, seems like a good idea then.

As per mlbtraderumors:
Around 8:42pm yesterday the Giants sent executives to meet with representatives of star Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, according to Craig Mish of Sirius XM (Twitter links). It is not clear whether the meeting, which is said to be taking place in Los Angeles, will also include Stanton himself. Top organizational figures are on hand for the Giants, though, with president of baseball operations Brian Sabean, GM Bobby Evans, and skipper Bruce Bochy all trekking south.
The meeting should not be read as an indication that a deal is about to go down, MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro cautions on Twitter. Rather, he says, “a trade is not considered imminent” and the Marlins “remain engaged with other clubs” regarding Stanton.
Obviously, such a sit-down could only occur if the Marlins have authorized the discussion. In all likelihood, it seems, permission would only be given if the teams believed they could potentially finalize a deal involving Stanton, whose approval would be needed for any swap given his full no-trade rights.
The west coast native is believed to prefer to play close to his Los Angeles home, but the hometown Dodgers have only operated at the fringes of the market thus far.
Both Stanton and the Marlins, perhaps, would prefer to see the Dodgers enter the fray. Or, perhaps, other organizations could join the Giants and Cardinals, the clear top two pursuers to this point.
There is, however, indication from some quarters that the Giants are willing to take on the bulk or even all of Stanton’s contract, as Jon Heyman of Fan Rag tweets.

Whomever it is, that's looking to acquire him will be doing this same thing. Flying out to speak with him. If it's not the Dodgers, he's not approving anything without a sit down.

Ohtani Update:
MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweets that executives from multiple teams are of the belief that Ohtani’s preference is to sign in a market that does not already have an established Japanese star, though Ohtani’s agents at CAA have not commented on that possibility. Morosi also spoke to one of Ohtani’s teammates in Japan, former big leaguer Brandon Laird, who offered a similar suggestion (Twitter link): “I feel like he just wants to come and not be compared to other guys who have already been here — to start fresh on his own, show what he can do by himself.” Yankees GM Brian Cashman publicly stated his interest in Ohtani for the first time today, calling Ohtani a “perfect fit” and voicing a willingness to let him pitch and hit with the Yankees (all Twitter links via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch). “It’s a big stage here and it’s meant to have the best talent to play on it,” said Cashman. “Ohtani represents the next great talent that is available in the world of baseball. This stage is made for players like this.” While the Yankees’ interest in Ohtani is hardly a secret, Cashman had yet to go on-record to discuss his interest in bringing Ohtani to the Bronx prior to today. Morosi also tweets that the conference call with MLB owners that will formally approve the posting agreement is set for 1pm ET this afternoon. The meeting is a formality at this point, though, and Ohtani is expected to be posted shortly thereafter.

What markets HAVE a Japanese star? Haha.
Someone needs to tell Otani that Darvish is a FA and Ichiro is no longer a star (outside of general fandom). Am I missing the plethora of Japanese Stars in America?

Maybe he means markets that haven't had a Japanese star before?
Who does that rule out? Yankees, Mariners, Red Sox (although Dice-K struggled he was still a huge star), Rangers, Dodgers...

Ahh, there is 2 then. Honestly, and it's no knock on NY or Boston or LA but if I'm a young kid trying to make my mark in another country I'm 100%, not going to the largest market. With fame comes extreme pressure. Maybe Otani is up for the challenge. But the media is cruel and unforgiving.

With big markets come big endorsements -- really big endorsements. heh heh Very true. And that's where Otani makes up the difference. But this day and age, you don't have to play in NY or Bos to get big endorsements. That ship sailed years ago.

The endorsement ship is still the Queen Mary.
You aren't saying endorsements in Kansas City and St Petersburg are the same as they are in New York, are you?
Endorsements in Milwaukee and Pittsburgh are the equivalent f tug boats.
