Yep, Japan will be a huge market for him. Disagree, though, on your assessment of worldwide markets. Those world-wide resources accrue to those playing in the major markets, like LA and NY, maybe Chicago, or winning championships. Even world championships won't help you sell Cornflakes in Dubuque if you are not performing in a major market... maybe somewhat to a lesser degree. But, if you star in Los Angeles or New York, sky's the limit. It's a simple matter of numbers -- denser populations of people who buy the Cornflakes. If I hadn't lived through Ichiro up here in Seattle I might be inclined to agree with you, but since I've seen what can happen I don't believe in the "have to play in LA or NY at all anymore. Hell, LeBron did it from Cleveland for gosh sakes, no disrespect to anyone on the board from Cleveland. That's an archaic model that is quickly going out of style in my opinion.

MLBtraderumors:
Mariners, Giants Will Meet With Shohei Ohtani; Yankees, Mets, A’s, Twins, Red Sox Out Of The Running
By Mark Polishuk | December 3, 2017 at 5:48pm CDT
5:48pm: The Mets are also out, as per Joel Sherman of the New York Post (Twitter link).
5:38pm: Ohtani’s list is “heavy” on West Coast teams, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports, though the Cubs may still be involved. Not every west-based team is included, however, as The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal tweets that the A’s aren’t involved.
5:28pm: The Red Sox are also out of the running, president of baseball ops Dave Dombrowski told Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. The Twins also won’t be getting a meeting with Ohtani, Heyman tweets.
5:16pm: The Giants and Mariners are among the teams that will receive meetings with Shohei Ohtani and his representatives next week, Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reports (Twitter link). It isn’t known who the other finalists are in the Ohtani sweepstakes, though the Yankees are one of the teams that didn’t make the cut, as Yankees GM Brian Cashman told reporters (including NJ.com’s Brendan Kuty and MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch).
According to Cashman, as per Ohtani seems to be leaning towards West Coast teams in smaller markets. This ties to a report from FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman saying that Ohtani’s reps are informing teams that the two-way star would prefer to play in a smaller market.

Guess all those endorsements in that NY Market wasn't enough for Ohtani...

Not interested in LA, either? Maybe he's camera shy? Or waiting to see where Giancarlo goes?

Or smart, less pressure.
Looks like the Giants are in on Stanton and Ohtani. They could get both and still be the 3rd best team in their division.

Not sure we would sign a guy who wants to avoid the pressure. heh

Apparently endorsements are the the key to the deal. San Diego fish tacos and craft breweries ads win out.

Stanton crossing his fingers Dodgers limp in. Bet he stretches it out as long as he can in to next week. Cardinals offered the best package and the most money, bet he chooses the Giants. As a Cards fan that would kind of sting but oh well, I'd love to live in San Fran too. Even if their baseball team sucked

I hate NYC, doesn't make me "avoid pressure" as I saw a lot of pressure in combat and in my current job. Some people just don't like NYC city for everything it stands for. Some do. I would guess you're not into things like Qualcomm, and technology companies, El Guapo. We've got our share of Billion dollar companies, and a quick flight or up the highway to LA or Hollywood. The world truly does not revolve around NYC. Plenty of opportunity for all. A lot more to SD than you'd think. but, yes, if you've visited and never left the Gaslamp district then of course I could see why you'd think it's all fish taco's and craft breweries. :-) And I do like both of those by the way. Anyway I see it's waste to talk about anything other than NYC to an easterner so I'll quit. Lol.

From mlbtraderumors: Seems fairly interesting, particularly the section on Rangers:
Shohei Ohtani’s narrowing market has dominated headlines today, though not every club joined in on the action. According to ESPN’s Buster Olney (Insider subscription required), at least three teams didn’t respond to the request made last week by Ohtani’s agent asking for each MLB club to pitch itself to the Japanese star via a seven-point written explanation. It isn’t known which teams didn’t submit the information, though it’s probably safe to assume the Marlins were one, as they’re the only team known to have declined a pursuit of Ohtani’s services. Unless a club had received some knowledge about Ohtani’s preferred destinations and knew not to bother, it doesn’t seem like there’s any reason why a team wouldn’t have at least tried to attract his attention. As Olney put it in September, not even trying for Ohtani “would be the general manager’s version of failing to run out a ground ball.”
Yankees
The Yankees weren’t one of the teams that made it through to the interview stage with Ohtani, though his agents at CAA reportedly tried to at least give New York some further consideration, FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman reports. It seems as if Ohtani simply prefers to play closer to the West Coast, and thus while the Yankees made a lot of sense for him on paper, there wasn’t any need to include them in the next stage of candidates.
Before two-way Japanese star Shohei Ohtani made his choice not to include the Yankees as a finalist in the derby for the two-way star, Ohtani’s representatives at CAA made pleas to at least give them a longer look, people familiar with the situation said.
The CAA case to consider the Yankees more strongly included 1) their fine young team, 2) the chance to hit a lot of home runs with their short porch, and 3) the marketing money that could be made as a Yankee in New York via branding opportunities.
Rangers
The Rangers are one of the teams reportedly still in the hunt to sign Ohtani, though if they’re at a disadvantage if Ohtani is favoring West Coast teams, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News proposes a more unique way for the Rangers to stand out — a six-man rotation. This would give Ohtani a schedule more akin to his one start-per-week schedule in Japan, plus give him more opportunity for at-bats in between his starts. Beyond just favoring Ohtani, Grant argues that a six-man rotation might also help the Rangers keep Cole Hamels and Martin Perez fresher, while allowing the club to manage Matt Bush’s innings in a possible transition to starting pitching. Texas manager Jeff Banister has spoken in favor of a six-man rotation in the past, and given the Rangers’ lack of starting pitching depth, now might be as good a time as any to be creative.
Mariners, Giants, Padres, Rangers, Cubs, Angels Among Teams To Meet With Shohei Ohtani
11:40pm: The Angels are indeed one of the finalists, as per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal (via Twitter).
10:39pm: The Angels are thought by “multiple sources” to be one of the finalists, Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan tweets. The Tigers are out of the running, according to Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press.
8:59pm: The Rangers and Cubs will both meet with Ohtani, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports (Twitter link), and they’re also the only two non-West Coast teams who appear to still be alive in the candidate process. The Rangers, Grant notes, have yet to comment on their status one way or the other.
El Guapo comment: Maybe the most interesting line in the whole build-up to who signs Ohtani comes from Buster Olney, commenting on the three teams that didn't make an offer. Miami, understandably, Olney says, since they are already involved in some Stanton housecleaning. Of the other two Olney commented something to the effect that not at least putting in a cursory inquiry was the equivalent of not running out a ground ball.

The quote wasn’t small market but smaller market, every other market is smaller than NY. A lot of teams still in it are NOT small market. Otherwise, the only West Coast team that’s truly small market is SD. Would be great is he went there, but it seems like the pool is far deeper than that.

Don't get the inclusion of Rangers and Cubs among his interviews. We agree that "west coast clubs" is too limited a term and "smaller markets" also seems not to fit, since LA Angels and eventually LA Dodgers would be rather large market. Frisco is no small town, either. Maybe the short(er) flights to Japan is key? heh
Guess it's just Ohtani's personal preference-list. Adding Dodgers to his visit list seems inevitable, but who knows...
We're still waiting for one of those "surprise team" announcements.

Maybe the Rangers and Cubs had great proposals to his agents?
Maybe he's not said he doesn't want to play in a large market?
Maybe his decision is based on more than maximising dollars?
Maybe he (like the rest of us) just absolutely hates the Yankees?

100% agree w/ Scott. The guy has had 2 years to think about this. And if he's immediately eliminating serious contenders then it tells me he knows where he wants to go. Or he's narrowed it down to 1 or 2 teams. Seattle has to be the front runner w/ their huge asian market. And I'm sure Ohtani saw a lot of Ichiro's career in that market and wonders if that could be him.
