The pp guys go on waivers I believe. i’m not waiving them, but rather i’m not picking up their contracts. With PP years, I have that option. If i don’t pick up their contracts, there is nothing to waive, so they are free agents. Id first have to pick up their contracts to have a player to waive, but Im not so there is nothing to waive. PP years are just like option years on a contract. Im simply declining an option. No waiver involved. Now, after today when the option deadline passes, then all PP guys not declined are assumed picked up, so come tomorrow, any PP guys dropped have to go through waivers because all they all have contracts, but until the option declaration deadline tonight, their contracts can simply be declined. Understood, and don’t feel strongly about it, but the way in which that seems to have been done in this league is by placing them on the waivers thread- see, for example, the first entry on Tigers waiver thread. Effect is identical from your perspective (you don’t pay a penalty). Don’t think it’s ever previously been done by treating them as options (for which the deadline is sooner).

All set out in ‘Exception 2’ of the ‘Waiving players’ rule. Like I say, it makes no practical difference to you, and I don’t care either way really. But seems pretty clear.

I didnt realize it was so clearly in the rules (it just seemed to follow). But that exception 2 actually makes it clear that I did it the right way: ”Protected Players (PP) who are released during this 'non-tender' period will be immediately DROPPED TO THE FREE AGENT POOL and will NOT BE SUBJECT TO WAIVER CLAIMS.”

The ultimate outcome was the same, but the reasoning and timing was wrong (they’re not treated as options, so didn’t have to be declined by the option deadline and don’t belong in the option thread). But this is probably the most tedious debate ever, so will just stop.

But this is probably the most tedious debate ever, so will just stop. It is useful to know we clarified that into a rule (and that that rule allows us to wait until UFA to make the decision), but I dont think its fair to call the reasoning itself wrong. There’s a reason the result is the same and its because the option analogy is on point, non-tenders are like options and that is why the written rule doesnt allow them to be subject to waiver claims.
