Each off-season, players whose contracts have expired become Free Agents. These players either become Unrestricted Free Agents or receive a Tag. Tags allow for an owner to either restrict their player's Free Agency or to assume his real-life contract. Please see Rule 3: Salary Cap and Tags for details on Tagging your free agents. RETIRING PLAYERS & TRAGEDIESShould a player that is under contract retire - whether officially or just from an inability to find a roster spot - the team that owns his contract is still obligated to pay him half of his annual salary for the length of his deal. The rationale of this rule is to prevent GM's from offering long and back-loaded contracts to older players as a strategy in Free Agent auctions. Should a player's career be tragically cut short due to injury or death, his contract will come off the books immediately following the season in which the injury occurred or immediately if in the offseason. If there is any ambiguity in defining how a player's career ended, the League Office reserves the right to make the final call. We ask that all GM's respect the final word of the Commissioner.
