Is there any particular reason why we close trading and free agency so far in advance of the start of the playoffs? Feels as of it kills activity in the league for no obvious advantage.

Shrug. Tradition? You have to find the right balance of trade deadline and playoff start that gets you the right balance of buyers and sellers. Too close to the playoffs increases the number of sellers. Too far away means too few sellers.
