Our Take:
Yankees bite the bullet and spend an outlandish amount to sign Moncada, outbidding even the Dodgers, as a way of dampening the tsunami of negative press created by A-Rod and focusing on the future rather than the recent past. Total package costs NY over $100M.
By the end of summer, Moncada proves it was money well spent, as he reaches the majors in August to replace a decent Jose Pirela, who got the call up in May to fill in for a pathetic Stephen Drew. Rob Refsnyder, still sharpening defensive skills, now has no future at 2B and is moved back to AAA to learn RF.
The back pages of all the City's tabloids are alight with Moncada photos and exploits!! One photo of Moncada dancing the mambo in a Manhattan late night spot with buxomy Brazilian nymphet Sharaza. He is compared to Robinson Cano, some going as far to suggest he has a Mickey Mantle-like future and casts shadow over Mike Trout. New York Post headline states simply: Bryce Who?

El Guapo has been smoking way too much.
I do think the Yankees come away with him and his final bonus will be $36m, with the Yankees on the hook for $72m.

Mets have Rd #1.21 pick. Thinking here is we won't have a shot at Moncada, but he could fall to us if his signing becomes becomes a Dodgers/Yankees brawl and ends up in the courts.
El Prudential will be very surprised if Moncada goes for $72M total package. The Dodgers are gonna run the price through the roof with their TV money and a plan to sign two or three of the Cubanos.
The Boston Red Sox invested $72.5 million in Rusney Castillo last summer, and the Arizona Diamondbacks spent $68.5 million on Yasmany Tomas.

That fake NY press coverage is enough for me to want this to be true. I put my money on Moncada capping off SD's mad rush to the middle of the standings though.

I'd love for the Padres to sign Moncada as I'm a lifelong Padre fan. But, I think it's the Dodgers who get him, myself. Just too much money in the coffers for the team up north to compete with.

If the Padres somehow outspent the Dodgers and Yankees on a prospect like Moncada, it would be a huge signal that this ownership group is looking at the Padres as a long term investment and is willing to take short term losses to establish a winning tradition and build long term franchise value. It's entirely possible they came in thinking the franchise value was being held down to a degree because of a lack of consistent winning and star Power.

Good point. Not out of the realm of possibility at all. That was our first inclination. We switched to NY Yankees because of their desire to rid themselves of the stench of Rodriguez. They, too, have a coupla dollars lying around, so it may be in their best interest to ante up now and get past the recent sordid history A-Rod dropped in their lap.
But we like the San Diego scenario. And the Dodgers have untold wealth and hunger. Would not surprise us at all if Moncada went somewhere in California.

Who's got 30m in the piggy bank they can just crack open tmrw and give to MLB for tax. That narrows the list a lot. Who's already over the luxury tax and thus would benefit the most from a guy making the minimum once he hits the show. There are two teams that have the most to gain through tax avoidance on the backend thus making up for tax paid now. And those two teams have the biggest piggy banks too. Others could be in contention, but the other 28 teams would really have to stretch to do it, while it'd just be biz as usual for the other two. For them, it's more like pay tax now or pay it in the future. For the Yanks and Dodgers, the moncada tax is effectively much cheaper than it is for everyone else because a cheap MLBer can help them avoid luxury tax, a tax only they pay at the moment.

Please god let the Marlins sell that thing in CF off to a collector and invest the earnings in Moncada.

That thing is center is perhaps the most bizarre thing ever at a baseball park.
But we don't think selling it will bring in enough...

Preller made his mark scouting in Latin America while with the Rangers. I don't see them (the Padres) going over the bonus pool and taking themselves out of the next two years of the July 2nd IFA market, not to mention the immediate %100 tax payment to MLB on top of Moncada's bonus.

The Yankees maybe had the best reasons (money aside) -- needing a box office attraction to replace legend in Jeter; needing a bat to replace Cano, who they didn't want to pay $240M; needing a big prospect in their system. etc.
But, as we speculated and intimated earlier, the long-shots are sometimes the front runners in these things.
We can understand the Redsox signing the guy; he is talented, and they probably wanted to keep him away from the Yankees. But we can't understand why the Yankees didn't sign Moncada...
Plus, the system itself will likely be changed soon. So teams were willing to spend big now before the changes are made...

Red Sox are now "Cuba North." They have some great young pieces for the near and long term. Bogaerts, Betts, Castillo and Moncada not to mention the two big MLB signings this off season.

As the owner of the drafted Moncada, I am less happy about this situation. No playing time this year, less opportunity for positions with such a deep system...

Something tells me depth isn't going to be an issue for this kid. He's the type of player they'll move someone to put him in when he's ready. Not to mention they didn't spend all that money to hold him down.
I think you got a great one there, Tony.

But where does he play? Dustin Pedroia at 2B Pablo Sandoval at 3B Xander Bogaerts at SS Hanley Ramirez in OF, maybe moves to 1B after Mike Napoli departs Rusney Castillo & Mookie Betts as OF's for the controllable future Leaving guys like Garin Cecchini, Daniel Nava, and Rafael Devers without opportunities.
