id say there are two good reasons:
1) good guys getting bought out could really affect playoffs
2) most teams have spent all their cash so the market doesnt really work well right now. allowing guys to get bid multi-year would just result in a number of under-market contracts. waiting till the off-season means they will get priced better more efficiently. Plus, will give more teams a chance to be in on the bidding.
